Understanding Image Licensing and Its Importance

When you purchase a license to use an image, you're acquiring permission to use that image under specific terms and conditions. A license is a legal agreement between you (the licensee) and the copyright holder or licensor that defines how, where, and for how long you can use the image.

It's important to note that the creator or copyright owner retains ownership of the image. They control its usage and distribution rights, even after the license is granted. This means that while you may have the right to use the image, you do not own it and must adhere to the specific guidelines in the licensing agreement.

Licenses can vary significantly in scope:

  • Duration: Some licenses may limit the time you can use the image.

  • Platform: The license can specify where the image can be used (e.g., on a website, social media, or print).

  • Geography: Some licenses restrict usage to certain countries or regions.

  • Type of Use: Licenses often define whether the image is for editorial purposes (e.g., news or blogs) or commercial use (e.g., advertising, packaging).

By purchasing a license, you agree to these terms, ensuring that you can legally use the image while protecting the original creator's rights.

Types of Licenses at IMAGO

IMAGO offers several categories of licenses to cater to different needs:

  1. Rights Managed (RM) – This license grants one-time use for editorial purposes, such as news articles, blogs, or social media posts. It is specific to topics of general interest, including politics, science, and the arts. RM licenses come in several distribution formats:

    • Standard: For online and internal presentations.

    • Extended: For print use and external presentations with limited circulation.

    • Enterprise: Custom licenses for unique requirements.

  2. Royalty Free Classic (RF) – This license type allows editorial and commercial use. You can buy it for a broader range of purposes without the need to track usage as closely. It's perfect for marketing materials and content that needs to be reused across platforms:

    • Standard: One-time use online with medium-resolution quality.

    • Extended: Multiple uses, including in print and advertising, with wider circulation.

  3. Royalty Free Premium (RF Premium) – A high-end option, offering the best flexibility for extensive and multiple-time usage across online platforms. Or our Extended option which includesweb, print, advertising, packaging, merchandising, and more.

Each image or video on IMAGO is tagged with its available license category, making it easy to find the right fit for your project.

When you license an image from IMAGO, you are investing in a specific right to use that content within the boundaries set by the license agreement. This ensures you respect the original creator's copyright while gaining access to the visual content you need to enhance your platform.
